Overview

Big Sable Point Lighthouse is a 112-foot tall black-and-white striped brick tower constructed in 1867 to navigate dangerous sandbars along the Lake Michigan shoreline. It is located within Ludington State Park and is managed by the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association. The lighthouse features an original third-order Fresnel lens, though it is currently equipped with a modern automated optic. Access to the structure requires a two-mile hike from the nearest parking area, as the site is not reachable by private vehicle. The tower is one of the tallest lighthouses in Michigan. Restoration efforts have maintained its historical integrity, including the keeper's quarters which now function as a museum and gift shop. The surrounding dunes and woods provide a natural barrier that isolates the site from the developed portions of the park.
