Overview

Uwajima Castle is one of only twelve remaining original feudal-era castle keeps in Japan, constructed on a hill overlooking the city and Uwa Sea. Initially designed by Todo Takatora between 1595 and 1601, the current keep dates to the 1660s when it was rebuilt by the Date clan. The structure features a unique pentagonal ground plan, a rare design choice among Japanese castles intended to provide defensive advantages. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The fortress maintains its original stone walls and earthworks rather than modern reconstructions. The steep climb to the summit transitions through a dense, preserved forest containing over 600 species of trees and plants. The keep itself contains a small museum displaying historical artifacts and samurai armor from the Date domain. Its elevated position offers panoramic views of the surrounding bay and mountain range.
