Overview

Big Pocono State Park occupies 1,306 acres on the summit and slopes of Camelback Mountain. It offers panoramic views extending across parts of Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. The park features over eight miles of rugged hiking trails, including the South Trail which connects to the Appalachian Trail corridor. A paved 1.4-mile drive provides vehicular access to the summit for those unable to hike the steeper terrain. The landscape consists primarily of hardwood forests and exposed rocky outcrops. Visitors can observe significant elevation changes, as the park sits at an elevation of approximately 2,133 feet. The site is managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. It serves as a popular destination for mountain biking and horseback riding on designated multi-use trails.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support due to the rocky, uneven terrain on the summit trails.

Bring binoculars if visiting in the fall, as the summit is an excellent vantage point for bird migration patterns.

Check local wind conditions before arriving, as the exposed summit is significantly windier than the surrounding Tannersville area.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the more strenuous hiking trails without adequate water, as there are no natural water sources or facilities once you leave the summit parking area.

Good to know

Closed during the winter months when snow and ice render the access roads unsafe for standard vehicles.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect sensitive alpine vegetation and prevent erosion; pack out all trash.
