The Begijnhof Diest is one of the oldest Beguinages in the Low Countries, founded in 1253 by Arnold IV, Count of Loon. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site characterized by its walled, self-contained layout typical of the 13th-century Beguine movement. The complex contains approximately 100 small houses and a central church, Saint Catherine’s Church, built in the 14th century. Unlike many other Beguinages, the site was designed to function as an independent town-within-a-town for lay religious women. The architecture reflects the transition from Romanesque to Gothic styles, notably in the church's structure. Most of the extant houses date from the 17th and 18th centuries, following various fires and historical conflicts. Today, the site is residential and serves as a quiet cultural zone for residents and visitors. The community was originally established to provide housing for women who lived a religious life without taking formal monastic vows.
