Overview

Mount Tsurugi is the second-tallest peak in Shikoku, standing at 1,955 meters above sea level. It is a center for Shugendo mountain asceticism and houses the Tsurugi-jinja Shrine near its summit. The mountain is served by the Tsurugi Tozan chair lift, which transports passengers from the Minokoshi trailhead area to within a 30-minute hike of the peak. The summit area features a wooden boardwalk system designed to protect the fragile alpine vegetation. Historically linked to legends of the lost Ark of the Covenant, the peak remains a significant site for both pilgrims and hikers. The surrounding area is part of the Tsurugisan Quasi-National Park, known for its deep valleys and steep topography.
