It is fed by the Lauer river, which flows through the Haßberge region.
The water depth reaches a maximum of 14 meters at the deepest point near the dam.
The reservoir area is a protected habitat for various species of waterfowl, including grebes and coots.
During winter, the lake is occasionally used for ice skating if the ice thickness is declared safe by municipal authorities.
Ellertshäuser See is the largest reservoir in the Lower Franconia region, spanning approximately 33 hectares. Constructed primarily for flood control and irrigation, the lake now serves as a significant recreational hub near the Haßberge Nature Park. The water quality is consistently monitored, facilitating its use for swimming and water sports. A circular trail surrounds the entire lake, allowing for an uninterrupted walk of about 3.5 kilometers. Facilities on-site include a designated swimming area, a boat rental service, and various picnic spots maintained by the local municipality. The surrounding landscape consists of gently rolling hills and agricultural fields typical of the Main-Rhön area.
