NASA officially ranked Kokino as the fourth oldest ancient observatory, behind Abu Simbel, Stonehenge, and Angkor Wat.
The observatory was discovered in 2001 by archaeologist Jovica Stankovik.
The site is located at an elevation of 1,030 meters above sea level on Tatićev Kamen peak.
It features carved stone seats known as 'thrones' where tribal leaders or priests likely observed astronomical events.
The site uses a system of stone markers to define the calendar cycle based on solar and lunar phenomena.
The volcanic rock formations are a result of eroded andesite lava from an ancient volcanic crater.
Kokino is an ancient Bronze Age megalithic observatory situated on a volcanic tuff hill in northeastern North Macedonia. Recognized by NASA as one of the oldest observatories in the world, it dates back approximately 3,800 years. The site consists of two platforms containing stone markers designed to track the movements of the Sun and the Moon during the solstices and equinoxes. Archaeologists have identified specific niches carved into the rock that align with the rising points of these celestial bodies. The site functioned as both a ritual space and a place for early astronomical record-keeping. The remains of Bronze Age pottery and other artifacts found nearby suggest the site was a center for high-altitude communal activity.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots, as the terrain is rugged, uneven, and covered in loose volcanic rock.
Bring sun protection and plenty of water, as there is no natural shade at the peak.
Visit during a clear night if possible, as the lack of light pollution makes it an exceptional spot for stargazing.
Attempting the ascent in flip-flops or open sandals, and visiting during midday in July or August due to high heat exposure.
Do not climb on, sit upon, or touch the ancient carved rock markers to prevent erosion and structural damage.
