Overview

The Icicles of Ashigakubo are a seasonal landscape art installation created by freezing spring water onto the mountain slopes of Yokoze. This natural-artificial hybrid display spans approximately 200 meters in width and 30 meters in height. Local residents divert water from mountain streams to create massive, tiered frozen structures that cascade down the forest hillside. The site features strategically placed LED lighting systems that illuminate the ice formations during nighttime viewings. These icicles are intentionally cultivated to reach their peak size during the coldest winter months. The project serves as a collaborative winter tourism initiative for the local Yokoze community.

Insider tips

Wear high-traction, insulated winter boots as the walking paths are steep and can be extremely slippery.

Bring portable hand warmers, as the open mountain environment remains consistently below freezing throughout the day.

Use a camera with manual exposure settings to capture the illuminated ice structures without washing out the colors.

What to avoid

Avoid visiting during unseasonably warm weather, as the installations undergo rapid melting and may be closed for safety reasons.

Good to know

Open only during the winter months (typically January through February); the site is closed during the rest of the year due to seasonal melting.

Etiquette

Maintain silence to respect the quiet mountain environment and follow all designated roped-off paths to prevent damage to the delicate ice structures.
