Interesting facts
1

The name 'Azeda' refers to the acidity of the local wild fruits that once grew in abundance around the surrounding hillsides.

2

The beach is officially protected as part of a municipal environmental zone to limit urban development and preserve the native Atlantic Forest flora.

3

The colonial mansion overlooking the beach was once the home of Brigitte Bardot during her famous 1964 visit, which helped put Búzios on the international tourist map.

4

The sand at Praia Azeda is significantly coarser and more golden than the finer, white sands found on the northern beaches of the peninsula.

5

The water temperature in this cove is often slightly higher than at nearby beaches because the rocky outcroppings trap solar heat and prevent deep-water mixing.

Overview

Praia Azeda is a secluded, protected cove located in Búzios, characterized by its emerald-green, calm waters and rocky coastal geography. The beach is situated within a designated Environmental Protection Area, which restricts motorized boat access directly onto the sand. A distinctive 19th-century colonial-style mansion overlooks the beach, adding historical character to the landscape. The beach is connected to the adjacent Praia Azedinha by a short, narrow stone pathway. Vegetation, specifically cacti and bromeliads, covers the steep slopes surrounding the small strip of sand. Due to its orientation and surrounding hills, the beach experiences minimal wave action compared to nearby Atlantic-facing shores. The beach is accessible only by a walking trail from the nearby Praia dos Ossos or by water taxi. It lacks large-scale commercial infrastructure, maintaining a more preserved appearance than the main Búzios beaches.

Insider tips

Arrive as early as possible to secure a spot, as the beach area is very small and fills quickly by midday.

Wear water shoes, as the seabed near the shore can be rocky and occasionally slippery.

Pack your own essentials like water and snacks, as the local beach vendors are limited in number and selection.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to reach the beach by car, as there is no parking available in the immediate vicinity; do not rely on finding open seats at the few existing beach chairs.

Etiquette

Respect the environmental zone by carrying out all trash; avoid climbing on the protected rocky cliffs.
