Overview

The Brienzer Rothorn is a 2,350-meter summit in the Emmental Alps accessible via two distinct transport systems. The Brienz Rothorn Railway is the only cogwheel steam railway in Switzerland that operates regularly with steam engines. A separate aerial cable car connects the peak to the Sörenberg side in the canton of Lucerne. The summit station houses a mountain inn and provides views spanning the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. It serves as a terminus for high-altitude ridge hiking trails connecting to Brünig Pass. The railway line overcomes a gradient of up to 25 percent using the Abt rack system. The surrounding karst topography is characteristic of the limestone geological structure of the region.

Insider tips

Bring a windproof jacket regardless of the valley temperature, as the summit wind chill is significant.

Check the cloud cover forecast, as low-lying clouds often obscure the mountain peak even when the valley is sunny.

Book seat reservations for the steam train in advance during peak summer weekends to ensure a spot.

What to avoid

Attempting the ridge hike to Brünig Pass without proper mountain gear or sufficient daylight hours.

Good to know

The steam railway operates seasonally from late spring to late autumn; the cable car schedule is independent and may vary based on weather conditions.

Etiquette

Sturdy, closed-toe hiking footwear is recommended; remain on marked trails to protect the fragile alpine tundra flora.
