Overview

Mount Greylock is the highest natural point in Massachusetts, reaching an elevation of 3,491 feet above sea level. Located within the 12,500-acre Mount Greylock State Reservation, it serves as the northern terminus for the Mah-Kee-Nac range. The summit is home to the Veterans War Memorial Tower, a 93-foot granite lighthouse structure dedicated in 1932. The peak offers views extending up to 90 miles into five states on clear days. The mountain's unique boreal forest ecosystem hosts species typically found in sub-alpine northern climates, such as the Bicknell's thrush. Visitors can reach the summit via a network of hiking trails, including a segment of the Appalachian Trail, or by a winding auto road. The geological history of the mountain is defined by metamorphic bedrock formed approximately 400 million years ago. It remains a key geographic feature of the Berkshire mountain range.

Insider tips

Check the summit weather forecast specifically, as it is often significantly cooler and windier than the base.

Pack multiple layers of clothing, as rapid temperature shifts are common at the peak.

Bring physical maps or download offline navigation data, as cellular service is intermittent or non-existent in many parts of the reservation.

What to avoid

Attempting to drive the auto road in late autumn or winter, as it closes due to dangerous icing and snow conditions.

Good to know

The summit auto road is closed to vehicles from late autumn through late spring due to snow and hazardous conditions; the park remains open to hikers, though facilities are limited.
