Overview

Mamure Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval coastal fortresses in Türkiye, covering an area of 23,500 square meters. Its layout features 39 towers and a triple-partitioned structure protected by thick defensive walls and a moat. Originally constructed by the Kingdom of Cilicia, the fortress was later expanded by the Karamanids to defend against Mediterranean naval threats. The site includes a mosque built by Karamanid ruler Mahmut Bey in the 14th century which remains active today. The complex is situated directly on the Mediterranean shoreline, allowing seawater to reach the base of its ramparts. Recent restoration efforts have stabilized the masonry of the towers and walkways to allow visitor access. The site serves as a rare example of a functional medieval garrison that integrated military defense with religious architecture.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear as the stone surfaces and castle stairs can be uneven and slippery.

Bring sun protection, as the castle offers very little natural shade when exploring the open-air battlements.

Check the stability of wooden walkways before stepping onto them, as the salt air causes rapid degradation.

What to avoid

Climbing on the outer parapets, as many sections have crumbling masonry and lack safety railings.

Etiquette

Modest dress is required when entering the active mosque section; ensure shoulders and knees are covered.
