Overview

Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park is a 25,445-hectare protected area in the Italian Dolomites, recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park is characterized by its high-altitude karst plateaus, jagged limestone peaks, and the prominent Fanes, Sennes, and Braies mountain groups. Lake Braies, known for its deep emerald waters and surrounding mountain reflections, serves as a primary feature within the park boundaries. The geological composition includes significant deposits of Main Dolomite, which creates the area's distinctive pale, craggy appearance. The landscape is shaped by glacial activity and high-alpine pastures that support diverse flora, including rare orchids and gentians. Numerous mountain huts, known as Rifugi, provide infrastructure for multi-day hiking traverses and traditional South Tyrolean cuisine. The park serves as a critical habitat for alpine wildlife, including chamois, ibex, and marmots. Elevation in the park ranges from approximately 1,100 meters to the 3,026-meter summit of Piz Boè. The area is interconnected by a dense network of marked trails suitable for varied skill levels.

Insider tips

Carry a high-quality physical topographic map, as mobile signal is unreliable or non-existent in deep valleys and high plateaus.

Book mountain hut (Rifugio) stays well in advance, as they are often fully reserved months ahead of the peak summer season.

Layer clothing to account for rapid temperature drops at higher elevations, even during mid-summer.

What to avoid

Attempting high-altitude hikes without proper mountain footwear or underestimating the exertion required for rapid elevation changes.

Good to know

High-altitude trails and mountain huts typically close during the winter months due to avalanche risks and heavy snowfall.

Etiquette

Stick strictly to marked trails to protect sensitive alpine vegetation; dogs must be kept on a leash at all times.
