Lac de Matemale is a 213-hectare artificial reservoir situated at an altitude of 1,540 meters in the Capcir plateau of the French Pyrenees. Fed primarily by the Aude River, the lake was created in 1959 primarily to regulate water flow for hydroelectric power generation. The site serves as a recreational hub, offering a beach area and a leisure center known as 'Base de Loisirs.' During the summer months, the lake provides opportunities for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and pedal boat rentals. Surrounding the perimeter is a flat, 12-kilometer trail frequently used by hikers, cyclists, and trail runners. The landscape is dominated by dense pine forests and views of the Cambre d'Aze massif. During winter, the lake serves as a visual backdrop for the nearby Les Angles ski resort activities. It is a popular location for high-altitude sports training due to its elevation.
