Overview

Quảng Bình Quan is an 18th-century gate that serves as the symbolic historical entrance to Đồng Hới. Originally constructed in 1639 as part of the Lũy Thầy defensive system, it was designed by military strategist Đào Duy Từ during the Trịnh–Nguyễn War. The structure functioned as a strategic checkpoint controlling passage along the North-South Mandarin Road. It was reconstructed in the 1820s under the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng using bricks and limestone. After sustaining heavy damage during the conflicts of the 20th century, the gate was restored to its original architectural specifications. It currently stands as a recognized national historical monument of Vietnam. The gate features a distinctive arched design and serves as a navigational landmark in the city center. It represents the historical border demarcation between the northern and southern regions of feudal Vietnam.
