Overview

The Castle of Frias, or Castillo de los Velasco, is a 10th-century fortress situated on the crag of La Muela overlooking the Ebro River. Its strategic position was vital for controlling the bridge and the passage across the river into the northern meseta. The structure features a prominent 12th-century keep perched precariously on a rock projection. It underwent significant expansion in the 15th century under the Duke of Frias. The site comprises a parade ground, inner courtyards, and thick defensive walls featuring arrow slits and battlements. It serves as one of the most prominent examples of rock-castle architecture in Castile. The surrounding town of Frias holds the title of the smallest city in Spain.
