Overview

Jiaming Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake situated at 3,310 meters above sea level within the Central Mountain Range of Taiwan. Known as the 'Angel's Tear,' it is the second-highest mountain lake in the country. The lake basin is a near-perfect oval depression formed by geological processes. It is accessible only via a multi-day high-altitude trek through the Yushan National Park buffer zone. The site requires specialized mountain entry and national park permits for access. The surrounding terrain consists of alpine grasslands and Yushan juniper forests. It serves as a critical water source for local wildlife, including the Formosan Sambar deer. The water level fluctuates significantly based on seasonal precipitation. It remains one of the most remote and strictly regulated natural landscapes in Taitung County.

Insider tips

Acclimatize to high altitude for at least two days before attempting the trek to prevent mountain sickness.

What to avoid

Attempting the trek without proper physical training, high-altitude gear, or the mandatory park permits.
