Porta Sant'Agostino serves as the primary eastern entrance to Bergamo's Upper Town, known as Città Alta. It was commissioned by the Venetian Republic in 1575 as part of the massive defensive Venetian Walls. The structure features a large central archway flanked by smaller passages, originally designed to accommodate heavy military and trade traffic. It is constructed from local gray sandstone, consistent with the architectural style of the surrounding fortifications. The site currently acts as a monumental gateway for pedestrians and vehicles transitioning between the modern lower city and the historic hilltop district. The gate is managed under the umbrella of the Museum of the Histories of Bergamo. The nearby walls have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2017.
