Overview

Silver Lake State Park is the only public park in Michigan that permits private off-road vehicles (ORVs) on sand dunes. The park encompasses 2,000 acres of terrain split into three distinct sections: a dune area for motorized recreation, a swimming beach, and a pedestrian-only dune area. The off-road area covers approximately 450 acres of shifting sand mountains. Visitors may bring their own 4x4 vehicles or rent them from local vendors located outside the park gates. The park shoreline provides direct access to Lake Michigan, featuring a significant dune formation that separates the lake from Silver Lake. Off-road vehicles require a specific DNR-issued ORV sticker and a flag mast for safety visibility. Pedestrian dunes offer expansive views of the surrounding freshwater landscape. The site is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Insider tips

Check the daily wind speed and direction, as high winds can lead to sand-blasting effects on exposed skin and equipment.

Lower your vehicle tire pressure to approximately 10-15 psi before entering the dunes to improve traction in deep sand.

Visit the pedestrian-only dune area to avoid the noise of ORVs and enjoy quieter lake vistas.

What to avoid

Attempting to drive on the dunes with a standard passenger vehicle that lacks 4WD or high clearance, as towing services are expensive.

Good to know

The ORV area is open from early April through late October; the park is closed to motorized vehicles during the winter months.

Etiquette

Strictly pack out all trash to protect the fragile dune ecosystem; do not attempt to drive on the dunes without proper tire deflation.
