The site consists of an inner and outer ward surrounded by curtain walls that incorporate remnants of D-shaped mural towers. The castle changed hands multiple times during the conflicts between Welsh princes and the Anglo-Norman Marcher lords. It was primarily a strategic defensive position rather than a residential manor house. Today, the ruins are maintained by Cadw and remain open for public exploration of the earthworks and masonry. The site remains largely un-restored, preserving the skeletal remains of the original stone fortifications.
