Overview

Sortelha is one of Portugal's twelve official Historical Villages, situated in the Sabugal municipality at an altitude of 760 meters. The village is enclosed by a 13th-century perimeter wall and dominated by a 12th-century castle built on a granite outcrop. Its architecture is characterized by dense, irregular granite dwellings that have undergone minimal structural changes since the medieval era. The village layout follows the natural contours of the massive granite boulders, which are often integrated directly into the house walls. A prominent Renaissance-style pillory stands at the center, symbolizing the village's former municipal autonomy. The medieval layout features narrow, winding streets and fortified gates, including the Porta da Vila and the Porta Falsa. Its strategic location on a rocky spur overlooking the surrounding landscape served as a critical defensive outpost during the Reconquista. The village retains a significant collection of Manueline-style doorways and windows, reflecting influence from the 16th-century Portuguese maritime expansion.
