Overview

The USS Cod (SS-224) is a Gato-class submarine designated as a National Historic Landmark, permanently moored in Cleveland's North Coast Harbor. Unlike many museum ships that have been modified for accessibility, the USS Cod remains in its original World War II configuration with authentic ladders and hatches. Visitors must climb through vertical hatches to navigate between compartments, as modern staircases were not added. The submarine completed seven war patrols in the Pacific Theater, sinking over 36,000 tons of enemy shipping. It was decommissioned in 1954 and opened as a memorial in 1976. The vessel contains its original torpedo tubes, crew bunks, and galley equipment. It serves as a floating museum dedicated to the history of the Silent Service. The submarine is officially closed during winter months due to the extreme weather conditions on Lake Erie.

Photo spot

The view from the dock looking down the length of the deck toward the conning tower provides the best perspective of the submarine's hull.
