Overview

The Great Buddha of Shuurakuen is a 18.79-meter-tall reinforced concrete statue located in Tokai, Aichi Prefecture. Constructed in 1927 to commemorate the wedding of Emperor Showa, the statue depicts Dainichi Nyorai. It sits atop a hill surrounded by approximately 60,000 square meters of greenery, including a park planted with over 500 cherry trees. The site was built by Yamada Saiun, a local philanthropist who also founded the nearby Shuurakuen park area. The statue is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Visitors can walk the grounds which feature various smaller stone Jizo statues and stone paths. The location is situated within a municipal park complex maintained by the city of Tokai.
