Overview

Mount Osore (Osorezan) is a volcanic caldera located on the Shimokita Peninsula, known as one of Japan's three most sacred sites. The landscape is characterized by sulfurous vents, barren grey rock, and the bright blue, highly acidic waters of Lake Usoriyama. Bodai-ji temple sits within this geothermal basin, established in 862 AD by the monk Ennin. The area is traditionally associated with the afterlife, where it is believed the souls of the deceased gather. Visitors walk through a desolate 'Hell' zone featuring heaps of stones stacked by grieving families, contrasting with the 'Paradise' area along the lakeshore. The volcanic activity results in a distinct smell of sulfur throughout the grounds. Geologically, the caldera is formed from a complex of pyroclastic cones. It remains a site of active pilgrimage for those seeking connection with ancestors.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes to navigate the loose, rocky volcanic terrain safely.

Bring a light jacket as the elevation and coastal winds often result in temperatures significantly lower than the base of the mountain.

Prepare for a strong sulfur odor which may cling to clothing and hair.

What to avoid

Avoid touching the water in the vents or the lake as the high acidity and extreme temperatures can cause chemical burns.

Good to know

The site is closed annually during the winter months due to heavy snowfall and road inaccessibility.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor as it is an active religious site; do not disturb the stone mounds left by visitors.
