Overview

Levice Castle is a mid-13th-century fortress situated on a volcanic cliff that historically served as a critical guardian of the mining towns in central Slovakia. The site features a combination of medieval castle ruins and a Renaissance manor house, known as the Dobó manor, which currently houses the Tekov Museum. The original water castle design was once protected by an extensive moat system. Its strategic importance reached a peak during the Ottoman wars when it served as a key frontier defense post. Much of the current masonry dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, showing remnants of defensive bastions. The site underwent significant reconstruction in the 20th century to stabilize the crumbling ruins. Visitors can explore the preserved exhibits in the manor house while walking through the archaeological remains in the courtyard. It is the primary historical landmark of the town of Levice.
