Overview

Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace is the only remaining Honmaru Palace building in Japan that retains its original layout and serves as a direct example of Edo-period residential architecture. The current structure was reconstructed in 1848 by Matsudaira Naritsune, the daimyo of the Kawagoe Domain. It features a large entrance hall, a wait-room for visitors, and the Karoro-no-ma, a room containing life-size wax figures depicting a feudal lord and his retainers. The interior preserves original wooden architecture, including authentic tatami-mat rooms and sliding paper doors (fusuma). It is part of the former Kawagoe Castle, which was once an vital defensive point for the Tokugawa Shogunate. The site serves as a museum displaying historical artifacts related to the domain's governance and local history. The palace layout showcases the rigid social hierarchy of the 19th century through distinct zones for officials and guests.
