The observatory was designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, known for integrating modern structures with natural environments.
The building is constructed largely underground to preserve the natural silhouette of Mount Kiro.
The Kurushima Strait, visible from the peak, features tidal currents reaching speeds of up to 10 knots.
The park is situated at an elevation of approximately 307 meters above sea level.
The structure utilizes exposed, weather-beaten materials to create a raw, minimalist aesthetic.
Kirosan Observatory Park is located at the summit of Mt. Kiro on Oshima Island within the Seto Inland Sea. Designed by architect Kengo Kuma, the observatory is partially subterranean, built into the mountain slope to minimize visual impact on the natural landscape. The facility features a distinctive V-shaped deck constructed from stone and steel. Visitors gain an expansive 360-degree panorama of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and the surrounding islands of the Shimanami Kaido. The site provides views of the complex tidal currents of the Kurushima Strait, which are recognized as some of the fastest in Japan. The concrete architecture incorporates textures designed to weather and blend with the surrounding forest over time.

Bring a jacket even in summer, as the mountain summit is significantly windier and cooler than the base.
Check the weather forecast for visibility; heavy fog is common in the Seto Inland Sea and can obscure the views of the bridges.
Carry a flashlight if visiting after sunset, as the pathways back to the parking area are dimly lit.
Do not attempt to walk from the base of the mountain unless prepared for a steep and strenuous hike; most visitors drive to the summit parking lot.
