Overview

The USS Pampanito is a fleet-type Balao-class submarine that completed six war patrols in the Pacific during World War II. It is permanently moored at Pier 45 in Fisherman's Wharf as a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can tour the interior, including the torpedo rooms, engine room, and crew quarters, which are preserved to reflect their wartime configuration. The vessel was credited with sinking six Japanese ships and damaging four others during its service. It also participated in the rescue of 73 British and Australian prisoners of war after sinking their transport ship. The museum is maintained by the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association. It offers an audio-guided tour that details the daily life and technical operations of submariners. The submarine functions as both a museum and a memorial to the 52 U.S. submarines lost during the war.

Insider tips

Wear flat, rubber-soled shoes as the deck plates are metal and can be slippery.

The interior features very narrow hatches and steep ladders; it is not suitable for those with limited mobility or claustrophobia.

Check the audio tour equipment at the entrance to ensure you have a device that works before descending into the sub.

What to avoid

Avoid visiting during heavy weekend crowds, as the narrow interior corridors become difficult to navigate.

Etiquette
