Overview

Skalnaté pleso is a glacial tarn situated at an elevation of 1,751 meters in the High Tatras mountains of Slovakia. It serves as a major hub for alpine activities, located directly beneath Lomnický štít, the second-highest peak in the range. The tarn is moraine-dammed and experiences significant fluctuations in water level due to its porous bedrock. A functional astronomical and meteorological observatory operates on-site, established in 1943. The area is linked to the valley town of Tatranská Lomnica by a two-stage aerial cable car system. Vegetation surrounding the basin is dominated by alpine tundra and dwarf mountain pine. It functions as a primary trailhead for hikers heading toward the Sedlo pod Svišťovkou pass.

Insider tips

Bring multiple layers of wind-resistant clothing as temperatures at this altitude drop significantly compared to the valley.

Use polarized sunglasses to reduce intense UV glare reflecting off the alpine rocks and water surface.

Plan for rapid weather shifts by checking local mountain rescue forecasts before beginning your ascent.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike to the higher summits like Lomnický štít without professional guides or proper high-alpine gear.

Good to know

Cable car operations are subject to suspension during high winds or severe lightning storms.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on marked trails to protect the fragile alpine tundra ecosystem.
