Overview

Shawkah Dam is a concrete barrier completed in 2003 located in the Hajar Mountains of Ras Al Khaimah. It was designed primarily for flood control and to recharge the region's groundwater aquifers. The structure features a spillway that directs overflow into a series of wadis, creating temporary pools after rainfall. An artificial park area at the base includes landscaped gardens, playgrounds, and paved paths. Surrounding the dam are numerous dirt trails and gravel tracks used extensively for hiking, mountain biking, and off-road driving. The area is situated in a basin surrounded by steep, arid mountain slopes typical of the Eastern UAE. It serves as a primary hub for outdoor recreation in the central Hajar range. There is no natural permanent lake, as water levels fluctuate significantly based on seasonal precipitation.

Insider tips

Bring a 4x4 vehicle if you intend to explore the unpaved mountain trails surrounding the dam basin.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes to navigate the loose gravel and rocky slopes.

Cellular service can be intermittent once you move past the main parking area into the mountains.

Carry at least three liters of water per person, as there are no shops or facilities immediately adjacent to the hiking trails.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike or drive into the wadi beds if there are clouds in the mountain region, as flash floods occur with little warning.

Etiquette

Dress modestly as this is a rural area; pack out all trash to keep the wadi environment clean.
