Interesting facts
1

The dam's construction involved the relocation of several local settlements, which are now submerged under Okuchichibu Lake.

2

The associated Raiden-ji Bridge is a complex spiral structure designed specifically to manage the steep elevation change between the dam and the valley floor.

3

Takizawa Dam is part of the Arakawa River comprehensive development project managed by the Japan Water Agency.

4

The reservoir area is known as 'Okuchichibu Lake' and serves as a major water storage facility for the Kanto plain.

5

The dam's spillway is designed to handle extreme overflow volumes during the intense typhoon seasons common in central Japan.

Overview

Takizawa Dam is a massive concrete gravity dam located on the Nakatsu River, a tributary of the Arakawa River in Saitama Prefecture. Standing 132 meters tall, it serves primarily for flood control and water supply for the Tokyo metropolitan area. The structure features a distinctive central spillway and is integrated into the surrounding mountain landscape of the Chichibu region. A unique spiral bridge known as the 'Raiden-ji Bridge' connects the mountainous terrain to the dam area, offering a singular architectural vantage point. The dam creates Okuchichibu Lake, a reservoir that significantly alters the local topography. Visitors can access the dam crest and an observation deck to view the mechanical infrastructure and the reservoir. It is one of the tallest dams in the Kanto region.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker even in summer, as the temperature at the dam crest can be significantly lower than in the valley.

Use the internal elevator or stairs to reach the inspection gallery if open, as it provides a unique perspective on the dam's inner structure.

Walk the full length of the crest to see both the reservoir side and the steep drop of the spillway side.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk along the narrow, winding local mountain roads at night due to limited lighting and potential wildlife crossings.

Good to know

The dam management office and some internal facilities may close during New Year holidays or for emergency maintenance.

Etiquette

Stay within marked pedestrian zones; avoid climbing on railings or restricted concrete barriers.
