Overview

Skyline Caverns is a karst cave system located near the northern entrance of Shenandoah National Park. It is world-renowned for its rare anthodite formations, which are fragile, flower-like clusters of calcite crystals. The cave features a guided walking tour covering approximately one mile of subterranean pathways. An on-site miniature train operates outdoors, providing a scenic loop through the surrounding wooded grounds. The cavern remains at a constant temperature of 54 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. It also houses underground streams and a subterranean lake system.

Insider tips

Bring a light jacket or sweater, as the cave temperature is consistently cool year-round.

Wear rubber-soled walking shoes with good grip to navigate damp cave pathways.

Arrive early in the day during peak summer months to avoid the largest crowds.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk the trail without a guide, as the cave system is protected and gated.

Good to know

Open daily year-round, except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Etiquette
