Overview

Volunteer Park is a 48-acre public park located in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, established on land purchased by the city in 1885. The park centers around the Volunteer Park Conservatory, a historic 1912 Victorian-style glasshouse modeled after London's Crystal Palace. The Seattle Asian Art Museum, housed in a 1933 Art Deco building, is located within the park grounds. A 75-foot-tall water tower built in 1906 provides a panoramic observation deck reachable by a spiral staircase. The park features extensive lawns, a reservoir, a wading pool, and a dedicated performance stage. Designed by the Olmsted Brothers, the landscape integrates formal gardens with naturalistic woodland areas. The site was originally named City Park before being renamed in 1901 to honor volunteers who served in the Spanish-American War. The grounds also host the Black Sun sculpture by Isamu Noguchi, which is positioned to frame the Space Needle on clear days.
