Overview

Sainte-Cecile Cathedral of Albi is a 13th-century brick Gothic fortress-cathedral constructed following the Albigensian Crusade. Its exterior features a defensive, austere design characterized by exposed red brickwork rather than traditional flying buttresses. The interior contrast is extreme, housing an extensive 15th-century Last Judgment fresco covering the western wall. The nave contains a highly ornate late-Gothic jubé, or rood screen, carved from white stone. The ceiling vaulting is adorned with Italian Renaissance-style blue frescoes painted in the early 16th century. It remains one of the largest brick buildings in the world. The cathedral functions as the seat of the Archbishop of Albi.
