Overview

Defileul Jiului National Park preserves a 33-kilometer-long gorge carved by the Jiu River between the Vâlcan and Parâng mountains in southwestern Romania. The park encompasses 11,127 hectares of primarily beech and sessile oak forests that provide critical habitats for European brown bears, wolves, and lynx. Geologically, the area is characterized by steep limestone slopes and narrow passages that historically served as a strategic passage through the Southern Carpathians. It is designated as a protected area to maintain biodiversity and karst formations. The landscape is dominated by the riverbed, which features frequent rapids and rocky outcrops. The park serves as a corridor for migratory species and maintains rare flora endemic to the Jiu Valley. Hiking and biking trails are developed along the valley floor and adjacent slopes, though the terrain is rugged. The park administration is located in Bumbești-Jiu.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, high-traction hiking boots, as the steep canyon trails feature loose shale and frequent moisture.

Carry bear spray and maintain situational awareness, as the forest is a high-activity area for large predators.

Check water levels before entering, as the Jiu River can rise rapidly following rain in the higher mountain regions.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike off-trail in the steep upper reaches of the canyon without professional navigation equipment.

Good to know

Trails may be restricted or closed during winter months due to rockfall risks and heavy snowfall.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on marked paths to avoid disturbing protected wildlife and sensitive karst vegetation; do not collect geological samples.
