The valley was formed by the erosion of the Zêzere Glacier during the Würm glaciation period.
It contains one of the southernmost populations of silver birch in Europe.
The Zêzere River originates here as a small, marshy spring before flowing into a deep U-shaped valley.
The rock formations surrounding the site are predominantly composed of Hercynian granite.
The location remains an important site for ecological studies regarding high-altitude peatland preservation.
Covão d'Ametade is a glacial depression located in the Serra da Estrela mountain range at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters. It serves as the source of the Zêzere River, which forms one of the largest glacial valleys in Europe. The site is characterized by high-altitude vegetation, primarily silver birch trees (Betula pendula) that change color significantly with the seasons. It functions as a natural amphitheater surrounded by granite peaks, including the Cântaro Magro and Cântaro Raso. The area is a protected part of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. The terrain consists of peat bogs and mountain pastures sculpted by ice sheets during the last glacial period. It is a designated stop for hikers traversing the mountain's high plateaus.

Bring layers as temperatures at this elevation fluctuate rapidly regardless of the season.
Stick to the established wooden walkways and paths to avoid damaging the sensitive peatland ecosystem.
Carry all waste out with you, as there are no trash collection services on-site.

Road access can be closed during winter months due to heavy snow accumulation and ice.
Maintain silence to respect the natural habitat; do not pick flora or disturb wildlife.
