Interesting facts
1

The castle is essentially a large, perforated chimney of volcanic rock, making it the largest 'fairy chimney' in the Cappadocia region.

2

The interior contains a complex series of tunnels that were once used by villagers to store food, specifically lemons and oranges, due to the rock's natural thermal insulation.

3

The structure was historically significant for the defense of the region, serving as a lookout point against incursions during the Middle Ages.

4

The village surrounding the base of the castle is known for its traditional stone houses and its historic role as a center for the citrus trade in the region.

Overview

Ortahisar Castle is an 80-meter-high natural volcanic rock formation modified by humans to serve as a fortress and living space. Located in the center of the village of Ortahisar in Cappadocia, it features an interior network of tunnels and chambers carved directly into the tuff stone. Historically, the fortress provided refuge for local residents during Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The summit offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Cappadocia region, including Mount Erciyes and the surrounding fairy chimneys. Extensive restoration efforts in recent years have secured the structure, which was previously closed due to erosion risks. The interior spaces include multi-level rooms once used for storage, defense, and grain processing. Unlike neighboring cave cities, the structure functions primarily as an observation point and vertical defensive outpost.

Insider tips

Wear shoes with excellent traction, as the stone stairs leading to the top can be uneven and slick.

The climb to the top is steep and involves narrow passages, so it is not recommended for those with mobility issues or severe claustrophobia.

Carry a light jacket, as the temperature inside the tunnels is significantly cooler than the outside air.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the exterior rock face; stay strictly on the designated interior staircases and marked paths.
