Overview

Umbul Temple is a 9th-century Mataram Kingdom archaeological site located in the Magelang Regency that integrates ancient stone bathing pools with geothermal spring water. The site features two rectangular pools constructed from andesite stone, adorned with intricate relief carvings depicting flora, fauna, and Hindu iconography. Unlike typical temples that served solely for worship, Candi Umbul was explicitly designed as a bathing complex for royal families and priests. The water originates from a volcanic spring, maintaining a warm temperature year-round, which is rich in mineral content. The ruins are currently situated amidst open-air rice paddies and tropical vegetation, reflecting the original landscape of the Central Java plain. Archaeological excavations have identified this site as one of the oldest petirtaan (bathing sites) in the region, predating the more famous Borobudur temple complex. Despite the erosion of some relief carvings, the structural integrity of the stone basins remains largely preserved through ongoing restoration efforts by the Indonesian government.
