Overview

The Tianmu Historic Trail, also known as the Yulu Historic Trail, is a former water pipe path that provided the primary connection between Tianmu and Shilin for early residents. The trail is characterized by a steep initial ascent comprised of approximately 1,300 stone steps. It features a historic black cast-iron water pipe that runs parallel to the path, remnants of the area's early twentieth-century water supply infrastructure. The route traverses lush forest environments and serves as a natural habitat for Formosan macaque populations. The trail segments eventually connect to the Yangmingshan National Park network, allowing for extended hiking beyond the base trail. It functions as a popular urban-to-mountain transition point in Northern Taipei.

Insider tips

Carry an umbrella or light rain gear, as the mountain microclimate frequently produces sudden mist or light rain.

Bring a sturdy walking stick, as the sustained incline of the stone stairs can be taxing on the knees.

Keep all food items sealed and hidden, as the local macaques are attracted to bags and human snacks.

What to avoid

Attempting the climb during or immediately after heavy rainfall, as the stone steps become extremely slippery.

Etiquette

Do not feed or make direct eye contact with the wild macaques; carry out all trash as there are no bins on the trail.
