Overview

West Bali National Park is the primary conservation area for the critically endangered Bali Myna, Indonesia's national bird. Covering approximately 190 square kilometers, the park encompasses dry savanna, monsoon forest, mangrove swamps, and coral reef ecosystems. It serves as the sole remaining wild habitat for the Bali Myna, which was nearly extinct in the 1990s. The marine area includes the Menjangan Island, known for deep wall diving and high-visibility coral formations. Terrestrial sections contain populations of Javan rusa deer and long-tailed macaques. The park landscape varies from low-lying coastal plains to mountainous terrain in the interior. Managed by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, it operates as a strictly regulated protected area. Visitors are required to hire licensed local guides to access hiking trails to ensure ecological protection.

Photo spot

The cliffs and turquoise waters surrounding Menjangan Island provide the most distinct visual perspective of the park's coastal topography.

Insider tips

Always carry a valid entry permit, which is obtainable at the park headquarters or via authorized local tour operators.

Book a licensed guide well in advance, as they are mandatory for most forest treks and provide essential wildlife spotting expertise.

Wear breathable, neutral-colored clothing and sturdy walking shoes suitable for rugged savanna terrain.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike unmarked trails without a guide, as the terrain can be disorienting and it is strictly prohibited to protect the sanctuary.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet demeanor to avoid disturbing wildlife; strictly follow 'leave no trace' principles; do not feed monkeys or other animals.
