Overview

Daimon Gate serves as the traditional ceremonial entrance to the sacred temple complex of Mount Koya. This two-story structure, standing 25.1 meters tall, is the largest gate in the Koyasan area and represents the separation between the secular world and the holy mountain. The current building dates back to 1705, replacing the original 11th-century structure that was destroyed by fire. It houses two massive Kongorikishi guardian statues carved in the 18th century by the sculptor Unkei's school. The gate is positioned at the western end of the mountain top, historically marking the final major point of arrival for pilgrims ascending from the valley. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The vermilion color and architectural proportions reflect the traditional style of Buddhist temple gates in the Edo period.
