Overview

Cesme Castle is a coastal fortress constructed in 1508 by the Ottoman Empire to defend the harbor against pirate raids and potential naval invasions. The structure is characterized by its six surviving towers and a moat that once circled the perimeter, now partially filled. It currently houses the Cesme Archaeology Museum, which features artifacts recovered from local excavations, including those from the ancient city of Erythrai. The architecture features a blend of military defensive design with thick stone walls positioned to oversee the Aegean Sea. An imposing statue of Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pasha, a prominent 18th-century Ottoman Admiral, stands prominently at the castle entrance. The site provides a panoramic vantage point over the Cesme marina and the Greek island of Chios. Much of the castle's layout remains intact, allowing visitors to walk along the ramparts for unobstructed views of the coastline. The complex serves as the primary venue for the annual Cesme International Music Festival.
