The park was originally named Mohansic State Park before being renamed to honor Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1954.
The massive main pool was constructed to accommodate up to 3,500 bathers at a time.
The park sits on the site of a former state hospital complex, with some original stone structures still visible in the surrounding region.
Mohansic Lake and Crom Pond are fed by the waters of the Croton Reservoir system.

FDR State Park centers on a massive 3.5-acre swimming pool, one of the largest public pools in New York State. The park encompasses 959 acres of rolling landscape designed for diverse outdoor recreation. Facilities include multiple athletic fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts. Two large picnic areas provide space for gatherings, complemented by extensive wooded trails. The park features the 18-hole Mohansic Golf Course on its property. Fishing is permitted in the designated Mohansic Lake area. The park grounds were developed during the 1930s under the Works Progress Administration.
