Overview

Trolltunga is a rock formation situated 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet in the Ullensvang Municipality of Vestland county. The formation consists of a horizontal sliver of rock protruding from a vertical mountain side. The site is a result of glacial erosion during the Ice Age when ice broke off parts of the mountain. The hike to the formation typically spans 20 to 28 kilometers round-trip depending on the chosen trailhead. The terrain involves an elevation gain of approximately 800 meters. The trail is marked by red 'T' signs maintained by the Norwegian Trekking Association. Safety measures include emergency shelters stationed along the route to protect hikers from sudden weather shifts.

Insider tips

Wear high-traction hiking boots with ankle support due to the rocky and uneven terrain.

Carry a physical map and compass, as mobile service is unreliable in the deep mountain valleys.

Bring more water and high-calorie food than you anticipate needing for an all-day trek.

What to avoid

Attempting the hike without adequate cold-weather gear, even in mid-summer; starting the hike late in the day, which risks being caught on the trail after dark.

Good to know

The trail is officially recommended only from mid-June to mid-September without a professional guide; winter hiking is extremely dangerous and requires specialized equipment.

Etiquette

Practice 'Leave No Trace' principles by packing out all waste; yield to faster hikers on narrow sections of the trail.
