Overview

Pookode Lake is a natural perennial freshwater lake situated at an altitude of 770 meters in the Wayanad district of Kerala. The lake is shaped geographically like the map of India. It serves as the primary source of the Panamaram rivulet, which eventually joins the Kabini River. The surrounding area features a dense evergreen forest with high biodiversity. A circular paved walkway encircles the perimeter of the lake for pedestrian access. The site includes an aquarium, a children's park, and a shopping center for local spices and handicrafts. Insider tips

Visit during the early morning hours to observe local bird species before the site becomes crowded.

Carry an umbrella or raincoat regardless of the season, as Wayanad experiences frequent, unpredictable mountain mist and rain.

Use the designated pedal boats to reach the center of the lake for a clearer view of the forest canopy.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim in the lake, as the water depth is inconsistent and the bottom contains thick vegetation.

Etiquette

Maintain silence near the water edge to avoid disturbing local birdlife; avoid littering in the protected forest area.
