Overview

Myōman-ji Temple is the head temple of the Kenpon Hokke sect of Nichiren Buddhism, originally founded in 1389. It is distinctive for its large bronze statue of the Buddha and the replica of the Pavilions of Enlightenment, inspired by the Mahabodhi Temple in India. The temple complex was relocated to its current site at the foot of Mount Hiei in 1968 to escape urban congestion. Its famous 'Yukino-niwa' (Snow Garden) is a dry landscape garden designed to frame views of the surrounding mountains. The temple grounds house the bell of Gion Shoja, referenced in the classic 'Heike Monogatari'. Unlike many central Kyoto temples, this site offers a spacious, secluded environment due to its location in the northern Iwakura district.
