Overview

Sanuki Kokubun-ji is the 80th temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. The site occupies the grounds of the former Sanuki Kokubun-ji, one of the provincial temples established by Emperor Shomu in the 8th century. The current temple belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Its architectural centerpiece is the main hall, which houses a statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The temple grounds contain significant archaeological remains, including the foundation stones of the original 8th-century seven-story pagoda. Excavations have uncovered roof tiles and pottery dating back to the Nara period. The temple maintains a collection of important cultural properties, including statues of Eleven-Headed Kannon and Fudo Myoo. The grounds are situated in the Kokubu district of Takamatsu.
