Overview

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral serves as the mother church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. The current building, completed in 1791, is the fourth version of the church constructed on this site since the arrival of French Jesuits in 1692. It features a prominent Portuguese-style facade that faces east, while the altar is positioned at the western end. The interior architecture is characterized by tall columns, decorative cornices, and a high barrel-vaulted ceiling. It is one of the oldest churches in Puducherry and remains an active place of worship. The exterior is painted in a distinct yellow and white color scheme consistent with French colonial architecture in the region. The church complex includes a small grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes on its grounds.
