Overview

The Broken Ring monument is a major memorial site on the western shore of Lake Ladoga, marking the point where the 'Road of Life' ice route connected to the mainland during the Siege of Leningrad. Designed by architect V.G. Filippov and sculptor K.M. Simun, it was unveiled in 1966. The memorial features two white reinforced concrete semicircles, standing 7 meters high, symbolizing the ruptured blockade ring. The gap between the arches represents the narrow escape route used to supply the starving city. The base of the monument features grooves in the concrete mimicking tank treads, representing the vehicle convoys that crossed the ice. A small observation deck provides a view of the lake, which remains a central element of the site's historical significance. It is part of the Green Belt of Glory, a ring of monuments encircling St. Petersburg commemorating the defense of the city during World War II.

Insider tips

Bring wind-resistant clothing as the exposed location on the lakefront is significantly windier than the surrounding woods.

Combine your visit with the nearby Museum of the Road of Life to fully contextualize the historical significance of the site.

The area is largely open space, so plan for minimal shelter during inclement weather.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk on the ice of Lake Ladoga during winter, as it is notoriously unstable and prohibited.

Etiquette

Maintain a solemn demeanor as this is a site of mass loss and remembrance; refrain from loud noises or recreational activities on the monument grounds.
