Overview

St. Philomena’s Cathedral, also known as St. Joseph’s Cathedral, is one of the tallest churches in Asia, built in the Neo-Gothic style inspired by Cologne Cathedral in Germany. Completed in 1936, the structure features two prominent 175-foot spires that serve as landmarks for the city of Mysore. The cathedral was constructed to house the relics of Saint Philomena, a third-century saint. The basement houses a catacomb containing a statue of the reclining Saint Philomena. The stained glass windows were imported from France and depict scenes from the birth of Christ, the Last Supper, and the Resurrection. The building is constructed with light-colored granite, which is characteristic of the region's architectural heritage. It serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mysore. The floor plan is structured in the shape of a cross.
